Soft White Noise for Babies

A steady, even hush, softer than the hiss of a TV between channels. White noise covers sudden sounds such as a door, a dog or a sibling, so they are less likely to startle a sleeping baby.

Why parents like it

How to use it

Every Shush Bean video shows our little bean for one minute, then gently fades to a fully black screen, so your phone or tablet gives off as little light as possible in a dark nursery.

Use sound gently

  • Keep it low. Choose the lowest volume that still masks background noise. If you have to raise your voice to talk over it, it is too loud.
  • Keep it far. Put the phone or speaker across the room, not in or next to the crib. Researchers who measured infant sleep machines advised keeping them more than 2 metres (about 6.5 feet) away.
  • Keep sleep safe. Baby on their back, in their own crib or bassinet, with nothing else in it.

Questions

Is white noise safe for babies?

Used at a low volume and kept well away from the crib, many parents use white noise. Researchers who measured infant sleep machines found they can be loud at maximum volume, so keep the volume low and the device more than about 2 metres (6.5 feet) away.

Why does the screen go black?

The picture shows for one minute, then fades to a fully black screen so the phone or tablet gives off as little light as possible in the nursery.

Can I use it for naps too?

Yes. The same sound for naps and nighttime can help it feel familiar.
